Silver

Silver is one of the best types of metal investment. In July 2023, silver is trading at 22.95 per troy ounce. However, silver prices have gone up as high as $25 in April of this year.

It’s important to have a variety of different assets to diversify your investment portfolio. Silver is a versatile asset. It can be easily liquidated and it is affordable to invest in.

Are you thinking about investing in silver but aren’t sure about what is the best silver to buy? Keep reading below to discover the best silver to buy to help diversify your investment portfolio.

Pre-1965 Circulated U.S. Silver Coins

Typically, junk silver coins consist of circulated United States coins with a silver purity of 90% and commonly minted before 1965.

Coins referred to as 90% Junk Silver Coins earn their nickname due to their lack of numismatic or collector’s value. Therefore, only their intrinsic silver content is taken into consideration.

The remaining 10% of these coins contain a composition of copper. Consequently, when these “junk” silver dollars are further refined, they yield approximately 0.715 ounces of actual silver content. They are the best silver to buy for metal investment.

Silver Bars

Silver bars are available in different sizes, including 1 ounce, 10 ounces, and 100 ounces. The 100-ounce silver bars are the most popular choice for metal investment.

People prefer them because they are convenient to store and handle, and they have the lowest additional costs compared to other silver options. A silver bar is the best silver to buy because these products are easy to sell when they need to be liquidated.

Silver bars are usually 99.9% pure, but bars from the Royal Canadian Mint are even purer at 99.99% and have unique serial numbers. These mint bars have a consistent size, making them easier to stack. However, the small difference in purity doesn’t greatly impact their value.

1-oz. Silver Coins

These government-mint-produced 1-ounce silver coins come in various types and styles. These coins have a silver purity of 99.9% and are commonly referred to by their country of minting and any notable coin designs. They are considered legal tender in their respective countries of origin.

There are 4 main types of 1-oz. silver coins available. The 4 primary types of silver coins are as follows:

  • American Silver Eagles: These coins have a face value of $1 USD and are minted by the United States Mint
  • Canadian Silver Maple Leafs: Minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, these coins carry a face value of $5 CAD
  • Austrian Silver Philharmonics: Minted by the Austrian Mint, these coins have a face value of €1.5 EUR
  • Australian Silver Kangaroos: The Perth Mint in Australia mints these coins, which hold a face value of $1 AUD

Of the 1-oz. silver coins, both American Silver Eagles and Canadian Silver Maple Leafs are considered the best silver to buy because they are also eligible for inclusion in Silver Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)

1-oz. Silver Rounds

1-ounce Silver Rounds are coins typically produced by private mints. They possess a .999 fine silver content, indicating a purity of 99.9%.

Unlike 1-ounce silver coins, because of their private mint status, these rounds do not hold legal tender status. However, they are eligible for inclusion in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs).

Rounds are the best silver to buy since they commonly sell slightly above the silver spot price. This makes them a cost-effective option for investing in silver.
